An "Open-ended" Art project

I had a class of middle schoolers recently and it was pretty wild. It's hard sometimes as an art teacher to try to teach something, and then allow for the students to create what they see in their mind's eye. As opposed to my saying "Everyone is doing the same thing ...a box."  After all,  Art is supposed to be open ended, allow for creativity, the different....right?
So in this class I showed them cylinders and boxes, explained how to join clay... sharing basic construction tips and the idea they were creating a "container with a purpose"...like a "wish" box and off they went.  As you can see there was a LOT of variety that resulted. Probably too much. The Wild part was problem solving with almost every student.
Were they happy ? They sure seemed to be. Was I exhausted after. You betcha.

Maybe next time, we'll just do boxes...
